Sigh, here we go again, Another example of Alabama racism, backwardness, stupidness.
I know I sound kind of harsh, but when I just got off the phone with the High School counselor
and find out President Obama's address to school children will not include my daughter's
school.
It is a county school, the county did not ban the speech, it was up to each school. It seems
our Principal thought it should not be aired or seen, or discussed. Though the teachers are allowed to
view the speech, but not share it with the kids.
All I gotta say is WTF. This is the President for gods sake. Read on for the gory details of
a group of people determined to stay ignorant.
The tipoff should of been when my daughter asked me to please Tivo the speech, since she
was pretty sure they would not be showing it in her school. I was like, of course they will
show it, you are in High School, and what better Civics lesson is there than a speech from
our sitting President.
I started checking out the local news source for Alabama, and the Birmingham area, and ran
across this gem in the local paper:
Parental reaction
At least one parent at Bryan Elementary in Morris was unhappy to hear her child won't be listening at school. Christy Abraham said she received an automated call from the school saying it will not be showing the speech.
Attempts to reach officials at Bryan Elementary were unsuccessful.
"I feel like the man was elected and he deserves the respect of any other president," Abraham said. "If he has anything to say to my child, I should at least give him the courtesy to hear what he's got to say.
This is the school my daughter attended while in elementary, but she is in High School now. Surely
they would show the speech, or at least the teachers show it on the computers in each room, with
internet access.
So I call the school and talk to the school counselor about this speech. She explains the speech
will not be made available, and only teachers can watch it, but cannot share any of the content.
I am welcome to check my daughter out, so she can see the speech, then check her back in
afterward.
I just get really pissed about the whole thing. I asked her why they are not going to show
a speech from our President. He was elected by a pretty good majority. I ask her how she
feels about it, but not after claiming the school is acting despicable about the whole
matter.
She won't share her opinion, explaining she can't voice her own opinion, or isn't allowed
to, or some such shit. I continue to rant on about the only thing it can be at this point
is outright racism, why else would they not make a speech to school children encouraging
them to stay in school. How can that be controversial in any way?
The school counselor mumbles something about you would think there wouldn't be
a problem to show a speech from our President.
I finished with telling her what a great experience it would of been for my daughter to
watch the President with other school children, and then discussing it together
And how disappointed I was with the school, and that honestly it really isn't any
more than veiled racism, and wrong on so many levels.
