I'm a quote kind-of-person. I just love a good quote. I collect them, have several quote anthologies on my shelves, and have occasionally used them in conversation and writing, too.
For example,
A fine quotation is a diamond on the finger of a man of wit, and a pebble in the hand of a fool. - Joseph Roux
So, when I opened my igoogle page this morning and glanced at the quote gadget there, I was shocked and amazed to find the following collection. While none appear to be recent, and some are definitely not, they all shared a feature I found amusing. They each commented on some recent happening in our political landscape.
See if you agree, and if you would like to play along, please add your own favorites, recent finds, and even original entries, if you'd like!
I'd love to see what you have to add to the list.
Her virtue was that she said what she thought, her vice that what she thought didn't amount to much. - Peter Ustinov
Sounds like a certain former Governor I've seen on the teevee. And her book--sure to be full of barnstorming quotes that I predict will prove Ustinov's insight to be golden.
It is dangerous to be sincere unless you are also stupid. - George Bernard Shaw
As with many of Shaw's quotes, this one seems to be a basic tenet of entering politics as a player or strategist.
- Never tell everything at once. - Ken Venturi
Max Baucus read this one before I did. And Governor Sanford probably should have. Then again, Sanford missed the Shaw quote, as well, so not surprising.
There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. - Douglas Adams
Yes, that second theory is the one that explains the existence of teabaggers and armed town-hallers.
It's a lot like nature. You only have as many animals as the ecosystem can support and you only have as many friends as you can tolerate the bitching of. - Randy K. Milholland
I've seen DKos dairies that prove this true!
Television is more interesting than people. If it were not, we would have people standing in the corners of our rooms. - Alan Corenk
I mean, as much as I love their characters on the toob, can you imagine having either Stephen Colbert or Keith Olbermann in the corner of your living room? Rachel Maddow, however, can have my most comfortable chair, foot pillow, and best bottle of wine anytime she'd like to stop by.
New York now leads the world's great cities in the number of people around whom you shouldn't make a sudden move. - David Letterman
I hate to disagree with Dave, but Washington DC's Mall area took this award away from NYC over the past weekend. Kudos to that guy who walked the crowd with the Public Option sign, though. That was courage and the true American Way.
Women need a reason to have sex. Men just need a place. - Billy Crystal
Wow. Where to begin? Sanford got beat up in two earlier quotes already, so I'll leave it to you to insert your favorite politician-sex-scandal-du-jour here ___________.
And, if you've made it this far, a little Abraham Lincoln-does-Yogi-Berra icing on this quote-tastic cake:
People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like!
- Abraham Lincoln
