Just picked this up from ThinkProgress.

I did not see it here but if someone has a more elaborate diary, please point me to it in comments and I will throw up the link.

Rush Limbaugh proposes segregated busing.

With no following announcement concerning his removal from his media bully pulpit. WTF does it take????

WTF does it take to get these racist, bigoted blowhards silenced?

WTF does it take to call out and validate the very simple, very obvious, and very painful conclusion that RACISM HAS GONE MAINSTREAM?

WTF does it take to realize that what is happening is the incrementalizing of racist rhetoric to make it more palatable to the populace?

WTF is it going to take to say that enough is enough?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    •  uh, guys? might wanna hold off on this one (0+ / 0-)

my connection is too slow to listen to the stream, but from reading brief snippet of the transcript posted at TP, it looks like limbaugh may have been accusing blacks/obama of wanting segregation.  that would fit with his previous MO of trying to paint liberals as everything that conservatives actually are.

can anybody provide more of the transcript?  we don't wanna look stupid on this one.

come on everybody, we're smarter than this.  listen to the whole stream.  his whole rant, including segregated busses for white kids with bars on the windows, is something he's accusing the media of calling for.  he's saying that the media is telling all whites they're racist.  listen for yourself.  he's projecting, plain and simple.

      •  but, worth considering (0+ / 0-)

is the possibility of rush employing a pretty standard, tired old strategy of making the unpalpable palpable. he is introducing these ideas into the discourse simply for the sake of introducting these ideas into the discourse. he knows that these ideas will break off and begin to have a life of their own regardless of how he attributes them initially. eventually they get separated from the source and the 24-7 news cycle floats them along.

my point is this: this is part of the growing and forceful effort to increase the acceptability and mainstreaming of racist thought incrementally. i agree with brklyngrl's comments regarding the fact that racism always has been around. it has. but now, it's going much more mainstream than at least i can remember in my relatively shorter memory. it is also a subtle form of fearmongering in both directions.

anybody with half a brain who gets that rant in any kind of context knows that he's calling newsweek racists.

i'm sure it wouldn't break his heart, though, if one of his (millions of) idiot listeners, who doesn't have half a brain, takes him literally and the meme started to propagate.

in any case, all the people here taking it literally are going to look just as stupid as the dittoheads are.  if he gets wind of this, we're handing him a huge, and deserved, PR victory.  let's not do that.

        •  Being in favor of segregation is not (0+ / 0-)

necessarily racist, although segregating people on the basis of superficial characteristics is easy and attractive to the lazy.  In Baghdad, the American military has segregated Iraqis who all look the same on the basis of their religious affiliation.  The same was true for the Nazis who segregated Jews on the basis of their religion.

Most recently, in the U.S., there's been a lot of self-segregation based on wealth.  That certain populations are denied access to money and that these same populations were previously segregated by observable criteria (age, race, gender) is not a happenstance.  But, that it happens isn't proof of racism or sexism or ageism either.  What it's proof of is the preference for a stratified/segregated society in which some people are inherently/inheritedly better than others.

In other words, the strategies they employ aren't motived by antagonism towards their victims; they're motivated by selfish self-centered interest.  And some of it is motivated by the fact that some people derive satisfaction from depriving others of things they don't even want for themselves--like appropriate medical care.

If you define their behavior in terms of the effect on their victims, then the behavior cannot be changed.  Because, what you're counting on is either shame or empathy and these people have neither.

  •  Well, sadly, I think racism was already pretty (4+ / 0-)

mainstream. Although this is ugly and painful to watch, I don't think we're going to see too many Americans jumping on board with Rush's call for segregated busses.

I mean, hey, if Rush and his ilk want to argue openly for a return to segregation, well, it's a free country and I can't stop them. I just hope they don't expect me to pretend to take them seriously when they say they aren't racists.

    •  What makes me crazy is that people keeping (0+ / 0-)

saying this is fringe..it's about 25% to 30% of our population.  White people are about 65% of our population and it is about half of white people.  Granted it is the older half and a portion of the uneducated, poorer group but still...it is not a fringe group as people keep saying.  It is a large enough portion of this country to be of serious concern.

      •  I think my point is, this is nothing new. (0+ / 0-)

Its not as if the people who have these views just developed them recently. They may be in a full blown panic right now, and so be out and proud with their racism, but that's because they're losing and they know it. These are the same people who wanted segregated busses in the 1960s, and they still want them now. If 50 years hasn't changed them, I doubt they're going to change. Fortunately, the rest of us now have the numbers to outvote them.

        •  I think it is changing and it will change as (0+ / 0-)

the older people die off and our population becomes more educated but right now the demographics are not in our favor. What we don't want to have happen is that this older generation passes on this hate to their grandchildren and people like Rush are not helping.  He foments hate and he gives voice to their anger and ugliness.

Nothing suprises me from this fat ass blowhard. What surprises me is no one, absolutly no one is calling him out by name, he is what is wrong with America and the sooner that is pointed out the better we all will be.
Almost 20 years ago, Governor Mario Coumo predicted just how dangerous Limbaugh and his hate speech would be for America, I guess we are seeing it come to pass.
I worry what will the end result be, this asshole needs to be stopped before the real damage is done, and the same is true for Beck.

I don't think Rush represents a good example of mainstream, though.  But, sadly, a number of (dumb) Americans listen to him and nod their heads in agreement.  He and Beck and the like are so corrosive and toxic.  The people that listen are the same.  It is sad that anyone should be so hateful.  Blech.

  •  Rush, etc. have made racism trendy (3+ / 0-)

When other people see and hear these dummies spread hate, they then assume that it is okay to do so and do it themselves.  We have all seen the signs carried by people at tea bag parties.  Rush, Beck, Levin, Hannity, and Co. have made racism almost a fashion statement, although they won't admit to it.  It is vile, it is wrong, but I am at a lost to know what to do about it.  You can't educate them.  Their minds are sealed behind ten feet of stubborn concrete.

And that is exactly what this is hate speak, plain and simple, hate speak. It needs to be put to an end, this is not the intention of the right of free speech.
I wonder, exactly what Scalia, Alito, and Sotomayer all children of immigrants who at one time were targets of the very same hate speech think of what is going on today. Not what Scalia and Alito say, what they really think about all of this. This type of talk is not Conservative or Progressive, it is Un-American. Are we going to go back to seperate but equal?

Fine!  Let's give it to him!  Anyone that doesn't want to be a part of this society can have second rate busses and public bathrooms.

We'll set aside special restrooms for him and his compatriots.  Doesn't mean we'll clean them.

We'll set aside a small portion of seperate busses for his ilk.  Doesn't mean we'll maintain them properly.
