Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of my least favorite people and politicians. His time as Gov. of Calif. has been a total disaster. Even now we don't really have a budget tho Arnold has taken away many of the benefits the poor used to enjoy here. Just yesterday it was announced that some of our Parks that were scheduled to close to save money would be staying open. We all know our parks are more important than the Dental Services he cut from all of the States Medicaid patients.
Regardless of what you hear in the News about Ca. being the most liberal states we have more than our share of heartless bastards like Arnold and the rest of the Republicans in office here. That said every once in a while they will surprise even me. This is one of those times.
About this time last week about 2 dozen disable people were facing eviction from apts many of them had lived in for yrs., even a decade. Regency Court Apartments was supposed to be a senior apartment community with the renters over 62 yrs old. No one told the disabled renters that when they moved in, and no one said anything for years until last month when they all got their eviction notices and they were told to move.
Although they had contacted the Housing Rights Center, which filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing alleging discrimination based on age and disability, tenants worried about the looming upheaval of their delicate home lives.
The deadline was coming fast and many didn't have the funds to move even if they wanted to. Not to mention the hardships many disabled face such as just packing, or finding someone to help them move. As a disabled person myself it broke my heart and filled me with outrage that no one could or would help these folks ass the panic set in. At the time Teddy Kennedys death was/is still fresh in my mind and I said to myself this is what he spent his life railing against and how much he will be missed.
A couple days after reading the original story of this major injustice the LATimes ran a follow-up story that really touched my heart and hopefully yours.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger showed up at this apt. complex to give a little speech and he shared this story with the soon to be evicted.
Schwarzenegger said he was inspired to help the tenants after reading about their plight in Thursday's edition of The Times and remembered the words of his mother-in-law, the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Shriver, who died last month, founded the Special Olympics and was an advocate for people with disabilities.
"All of a sudden I heard [her] voice in my ear," Schwarzenegger said. "She says, 'Arnold, why are you sitting around now? You just read the story, do something!' " The governor said he called Star-Holdings, the Illinois-based owner of the property, who agreed not to pursue the lease terminations.
Schwarzenegger posted the good news on his Twitter page Thursday night, but tenants were anxious to hear him announce it in person. Armed with cameras and photos of the former actor, they crowded the governor and nervously offered their gratitude. LATimes
This story is living proof that Liberals like the Kennedys, like you and hopefully me, can plant the seeds that will continue to grow in American long after we leave this world. So the next time you want to throw up your hand and say "I quit", or somesuch nonsense I hope you too will hear a little whisper in your ear saying " why are you sitting around now? You just read the story, do something!"
