Gary Bauer, noted whack-a-doodle and all-around rightwing nut job, was given a platform at Politico today to explain why President Obama uses God's name in vain. Seriously.
Bauer lays out the case:
For example, Obama has referenced the Sermon on the Mount in support of special rights for homosexuals, despite the Scriptures’ clear support of marriage between one man and one woman and its admonitions to celebrate sex inside the married relationship only.
Actually, Obama referenced the Sermon on the Mount in support of legal rights for gay people, not "special rights." And I'm guessing he was referencing Matthew 7:1-6 - Bauer should reread that one.
And then:
Explaining his decision to lift an executive ban on federal funding of embryo-destructive stem cell research, Obama said, "As a person of faith, I believe we are called to care for each other and work to ease human suffering. I believe we have been given the capacity and will to pursue this research — and the humanity and conscience to do so responsibly."
Personally, I don't recall Obama outlining his "embryo-destructive" policy, and I assume Bauer isn't taking issue with the idea of ending human suffering, so I guess he's left with the position that scientists are agents of Satan.
This one was my favorite:
At the University of Notre Dame, he told graduates, "Maybe we won’t agree on abortion, but we can still agree that this is a heart-wrenching decision for any woman to make, with both moral and spiritual dimensions."
I'm not sure why Bauer is arguing against the idea that morality and religion might have a part in the abortion debate -- isn't that the whole reason for the anti-choice movement?
Anyway, you get the idea. Obama has no right to invoke God or his faith unless it's lined up 100% with Gary Bauer's beliefs.
Of course Bauer insists that:
I don’t mean to question the sincerity of Obama’s faith.
And I believe him. I'm sure that he believes that Obama is 100% sincere. For a Kenyan-born Muslim.
