I got some ice cream
I got some ice cream
and you don't have none
you don't have none
'cuz you can't afford it
you can't afford it...
Remember that? That's exactly what came to mind when my friend told me about her first experience purchasing meds on Part D.... follow me down under...
My friend has a rare blood cancer, so she needs many meds to keep her alive. She recently divorced, so she lost her health care coverage. Since she's on disability, she is eligible for Medicare.
Today, she went to make her normal drug purchase and the cashier announces "that'll be $500". My friend just about dropped dead right there. She paid $200 and left the other $300-worth on the counter - and she hasn't even hit the donut hole yet!!
To me, this is no different than Guido threatening to break your legs if you don't give him $500. "Here's your life-saving drugs, right here... oh, you can't afford it?? That's too bad..."
I could choose to rant about the seedy politics behind the non-negotiable drug prices, but I'd just be preaching to the choir. So instead, I decided to treat everyone to that hilarious vintage Eddie Murphy skit...enjoy!
