Lots of handwringing going on in a top rec'ed diary about a man who wrote a story about Daily Kos and it's community's polling activity. You can see Mr. Greenwald's piece here.
The problem Glenn Greenwald has with this diary is not so much the words inside of it, but the poll at the end. Mr. Greenwald seems to be tying a nice bow around his objective point, which is that anyone who would (in this case Huffington Post) object to President Obama's handling of certain issues will be discredited and painted as a rival (aka Right wing).
What I find lacking in Mr. Greenwald's brief analysis is that it only captures a small part of the entire community. By viewing the diary as a symptom of all DKos reader's beliefs, he shortchanged a lot of the community's realistic way it approaches politics in the spectrum of progressive thought.
My thoughts about this diary, is that it was clearly a rant piece created to explain the diarist's (KHinSF) views on the way The Huffington Post has been heading. The diarist made some very reasonable claims about the censoring of comments there and Arianna's weird piece on how the VP should resign. The poll at the bottom in no way was descriptive enough to tell the whole story, as was done very eloquently in the comments section. This was the flaw, and unfortunately the concentration of the part of Mr. Greenwald's opinion.
But the question still remains. Does the Daily Kos community really think that all negativity about Obama is not warranted? That is the spirit of this poll.
------------------
To KHinSF's credit, she/he may have hit a proper nerve here in several areas..
Do these polls really matter? Only a small percentage of people actually take part, none of the answers provided could ever be considered the majority's view.. especially since most questions end with pie as an option.
What does it say about Mr. Greenwald in general? I have no doubts that he is a reasonable person, but his issue with this in particular is odd. Why would a very innocent, unscientific poll be met with this disdain? Is there an attachment to HP that we don't realize? The problem I have with this is the framing. It is not ok to criticize left leaning media for taking a slight tilt to the right (in a very loosely worded, unscientific poll), but it is fine to criticize a liberal blog for calling the media out on it. It doesn't add up.
