Last night, I went to sleep thinking that I might have to boycott reading all political headlines for a day. I feared that headlines such as: "Loss in key gubernatorial races shows brewing dissatisfaction with Obama" would be all that was available. Watching the Daily Show BEFORE the election results had come in showed how the mainstream media was salivating at the idea of a sweeping Republican victory in all the big races. Well, a couple of minutes ago, I had a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Join me below the fold for a brief explanation...
On CNN.com, I was greeted with the following headline Analysis: Elections not a referendum on Obama
This headline blew my mind. Had a major media outlet actually published a reasonable and accurate depiction of what happened last night, with no attempt at spinning to conservatives' delight? I admit, I never thought CNN had it in them. Now, I am at work and haven't had the opportunity to watch a lick of the cable TV coverage today, but I am curious to see if it isn't all that bad, at least on CNN. This morning, I could just hear the words Rush probably already yelled at the top of his lungs: "America REJECTS Obama! Yes, the Republicans are headed for a landslide takeover in 2010. You heard it hear first." I am grateful and pleasantly surprised that at least one major website has not jumped on the loony bandwagon, at least for this story.
I would also add that the article is worth a read, simply because it is as well thought out and reasonable as the headline preceding it. Not only does it defend the headline (albeit superficially) with some important data, it also touches on the national congressional special elections and the brewing GOP civil war. If anything, those are the most satisfying sections of the piece. In any event, I think CNN deserves credit. This is a short diary, mostly because I don't really know what else to say about this matter that I haven't above. Perhaps I need a poll to make it at least a bit more meaty.
