I really am confused, and so is my Senator, I fear.
I just spend half an hour on the phone with Senator Seward's office. He is the NY Senator for area 51, where I live. I asked if he would support the Marriage Equality Act if it reached the floor.
I was told that although he DOES support civil unions, he does NOT support same sex marriage, so he would vote down this bill.
So I asked the man on the phone to help me understand. And at the end, when all I had was still semantics and gobbledy gook, I said that I appreciated the guy's time, but I thought that splitting hairs while people's hearts and lives hung in the balance was a pretty squirmy politician's move, and that I was disappointed in Senator Seward's representation of me and my family. I also mentioned that my husband and I had heard about this bill in church, which I thought might help, more mainstream. Cleverly disguised liberals are we. Ha.
I really don't get it. Senator Seward's staff can be reached 607-432-5524 today. Maybe someone with more smarts than me can parse this out.
You can find your own NYS Senator --> here. <-- CALL THEM AND ASK THEM IF THEY WILL COME BACK TO VOTE FOR THE MARRIAGE EQUALITY BILL. If it's what you want, tell them you want it passed. It's just one phone call for you, but maybe they are getting tired of trying to speak through both sides of their mouth and will cave. Stranger things have happened.</p>
WE SHOULD ALL BE EQUALS UNDER THE LAW. There is no better time to fight injustice than when it is happening right in front of you, and my fellow New Yorkers, here's your shot.
