The day after Thanksgiving, Americans around the country will rally together to support the public option. This is a truly grassroots effort, and I count on you all to spread the word...
Polls show that at least 55% of Americans support having a choice of the public option, and according to the New England Journal of Medicine, "63 percent of physicians support a health reform proposal that includes both a public option and traditional private insurance."
Some conservative Democrats are against the public option because they get campaign contributions from powerful special interests. In Connecticut, Senator Joe Lieberman is trying to filibuster debate on the public option, even when the people are behind the public options. This is because he gets contributions from the insurance companies in his state. Senator Lieberman is supposed to represent the people of his state, not insurance companies and their lobbyists.
Support for the public option continues to grow. "According to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Tuesday, 48 percent of those questioned favor a public option, with 42 percent opposed to such a plan." If the majority of Americans support the public option, we should have it. That is how democracy is supposed to work.
The far right wingers, though in the minority, have mobilized to kill health care reform, holding rallies and screaming at town hall meetings, all while getting the media's attention. It is time for the true majority to come out of the woodwork and pressure politicians and the media to support the public option.
We don't need microphones or a stage, we need numbers. We need to take to the streets, non-violently, and demand the public option. We can hold our politicians to account, and can sway them if we show strength in numbers.
I propose that we collectively rally at 100 cities across the country in support of the public option. November 27, save the date. Let's rally at the town halls/state capitols of these cities (listed in alphabetical order) and let our voices be heard! Let's try to get to 1 million strong by November 27! I am counting on you.
