Maybe a lesson in history would be of benefit now.
Why did Rome Fall?
There are adherents to single factors, but more people think a combination of such factors as Christianity, decadence, lead, monetary trouble, and military problems caused the Fall of Rome. Imperial incompetence and chance could be added to the list. Even the rise of Islam is proposed as the reason for Rome's fall............
I have come to the conclusion, Americans are the stupidest people in the world.
For one reason, we don't ever seem to learn anything from history, but beyond that is how many people listen to the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, two of the biggest hate mongering, fear spreading blowhards in the world, and stand on their every word, believing their diatribe without question.
The latest controversy [and believe me there are lots more] is the trying of the terrorists complicit in the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th.
Supposedly it would be dangerous to try the terrorists in a civilian court, because that will give the terrorists a platform to spout their beliefs and provide another reason to attack us.
Now how stupid is that? As if terrorists need a reason to attack us again. That's what makes them terrorists. They don't need a reason. It's their job, and trying some of them in a civil court isn't going motivate them any more [or less].
Besides, the terrorists don't need to physically attack us again. We're doing the job for them.
Our military is at a breaking point, fighting two wars we have no hope of winning. The divide between the have's and the have not's is expanding, and we are becoming increasingly polarized, hateful and distrustful of each other, to the point we are willing to forsake the principles this country was founded upon, and what has made us stand out among others.
All the terrorists have to do now is sit back and wallow in the knowledge they've accomplished what they set out to do, and watch as the pure fabric of this country is torn apart from within.
