In a statement, Sen. Ben Nelson repeated what he told a Nebraska radio station earlier today: Unless abortion language is changed in the health care bill, he will not vote for cloture but instead stand with a Republican filibuster. He praised some provisions of a proposed compromise, that create teen pregnancy programs and provide tax credits for adoption, but said the bill would effectively relax the Hyde amendment.
That is it folks... The compromising has whet their teeth and now they want more and that wont happen.
Any new anti-abortion measure in the bill will only lead to multiple liberal senators to vote no. And thus we are at a stage where we cant go forward.
The base (Which includes me and many many many other progressives)has checked out of this mess. We say no on this bill because the massive amount of compromise had lead to a bill that is nothing but a dream come true for Insurance companies.
Dean is out and instead of respecting his opinion. This changed more Bush like Obama sends out his political attack dogs on Dean and progressives. Alienating thousands in the process and further eroding support for the bill.
This bill is toast folks. Just like last time, massive compromising just to claim to get something done will cost dems big in 2010. Can they salvage? Sure they can try reconciliation and they can also just try to ram in a single payer system and try to regain some of the respect they lost in this fiasco. However something tells me they will try and try and continue to erode support until finally it fails to pass.
The ANYTHING for a D system must stop folks. Without true progressives in congress real healthcare reform will never happen.
