There seems to be a great deal of confusion here regarding statements and promises made by President Obama during his successful 2008 campaign. But there is one thing of which I am certain:
Despite numerous traditional media and blog reports to the contrary, then-Senator Barack Obama did not campaign on the spread option. Astute observers have known for quite some time that Obama generally favors a pro-style offense, knowing that defenses - especially in major conferences - will adapt and recruit the speed necessary to stop this rather gimmicky offense. I mean, hell: look at what the Tide did to Florida in the SEC Championship Game!
Now, I would imagine that the president is a fan of the triple option, especially the wishbone, despite it having fallen out-of-favor in major college football. The wishbone was used with great success by Darrel Royal at Texas, and with even greater success by Paul "Bear" Bryant at Alabama.
But the spread option? No way.
I just can't for the life of me understand what all the fuss is about.
