As I've become more involved in political activism over the past few years (prompted in no small part by the community here), I've found myself looking for ever more ways to play a part and help make a difference.
This year, I'm looking to take that another step further, and I'm working with a couple of local progressive candidates to help set up and manage both a community organization and fundraising PACs.
Trouble is, I've never done that before.
So here's where I decided that rather than fly blind, I'd turn once again to the folks here at DKos for advice and assistance. Any and all advice is welcome - I'm familiar with politics in general and a fairly quick learner, but there are a lot of details to take in. I've been perusing the New York State (we're in Rochester, NY) campaign finance laws on our Board of Elections site to start with and whew, it's a bundle of info to make sense of.
So the main focus is on candidate PACs to support a couple of bids for City Council and State Legislator positions, and on community organizing (in the manner of ACORN or OFA) to push the current City Council towards more progressive action, particularly transportation (Rochester used to have a highly developed subway and streetcar system, before the big 50s rush to embrace the car caused the city to lose interest and dismantle everything).
I've been giving myself a crash course on all this from online resources, but again, ANY advice or information you all may have from your various experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry for the non-diary diary, but I figured given the nature of the site, nobody would mind me posting this.
Thanks in advance, everyone!
