We are currently enjoying the fruits of nearly three decades of right wing ascendancy: high unemployment, ballooning deficits, enormous national debt, a planet that is becoming less and less fit for human habitation, enormous personal debt, inadequate medical care, inadequate education, eroded manufacturing base, inadequate infrastructure, 2 (at least) wars, tarnished image, simultaneously bloated and fragile financial system. I could go on but I've got a point to make.
For years many of us have worked are asses off to fight back against the people who have created this mess. At times it seemed like we would never win. If your anything like me, your heart was broken in 2004 when, in the face of undeniable evidence of the utter failure of Republican ideology, George W. Bush won a second term with majorities in both houses of congress!
In '06 we started rolling back Republican power. In '08 we took back control. Throughout 2009 we made a lot of progress in beginning to clean up the giant mess that the Republicans left for us. But we've really just begun.
NOW the Republicans want power back and the way they want to get it back is by exploiting peoples' anger about the condition of the world we live in. A condition they created! They think the public is stupid enough to transfer blame to Democrats for the mess that they created! Doesn't that make you furious?
Maybe the Democrats don't live up to our expectations. But my anger at the Republicans -- at the sheer injustice of them benefiting in anyway from the problems they created -- is way to great for me to have even 1 ounce of anger left over for the Democrats.
As far as I'm concerned the Democrats are my family. We may have our disagreements, but when we're under atack we unite and protect our own ferociously.
I'm ready to listen to constructive criticism about Democratic policies and actions, but we are under assault right now and I really don't have any patience for mockery, insults and division.
Finally, a word about the Coakley race. The election is Tuesday. Right now we all need to rally around our Democratic sister and push her over the finish line. Now is NOT the time to criticize her. If you wanted to critique her campaign, you should have got that out of your system a month or more ago. Now is the time to get behind her and send a message to Republicans, teabaggers and anyone else who wants to stand in the way of progress.
Not this time.
Footnote: Sorry, no time to edit, just had to get this off my chest.
