Steve Kornacki is reporting that birther Scott Brown is leading Martha Coakley by 2, in Martha Coakley's own internal polls! If that doesn't wake you up to the closeness of this election, I don't know what will.
It is clear now we need to do everything we can to save this election. If you care about any issue, literally any issue, that the government could conceivably have influence you have to be interested in this race. And if you are reading this I bet you care about roughly the same things I care about: Halting climate change, full civil rights for all our citizens, healthcare as a human right, an economy that works for all of us. If you care about any of those things. Any of them, then you have to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about passing healthcare reform? Or even oppose the current healthcare bill and wish we were doing more? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about ensuring equal rights for all of our country? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about tackling climate change by repowering our economy with green jobs? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about ensuring a quality education for all our children? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about a humane approach to all of our brothers and sisters living in our great country? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about creating jobs and getting our economy back on track? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about reigning in Wall Street and getting our money back? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
Care about ensuring quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans? Time to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
I could go on and on. All these issues depend on being able to pass legislation through the Congress of the United States of America. And right now all those problems require 60 US Senators to vote for them. The Republican Party has decided that saying no is better than trying to solve our challenges. I don't care if you think Obama has done the most amazing job or the worst job ever: none of our goals will be helped if Scott Brown wins on Tuesday. In fact, all of our goals will be dramatically set back. And that is exactly why we all need to leave it all on the field for Martha Coakley.
And that's exactly what so many of you have been doing. The outpouring of activism over the last few days has renewed my faith in progressives and our system of government.
NoFortunateSon was angry and fired up
I have never met a person who likes to phone bank. I am very unnerved by it, fearful that I will get some Republican by mistake, or just get yelled at in general for bothering someone in the worst possible moment. But it is always extremely rewarding, even if I receive a disappointing answer. Today, I spoke with an elderly resident in Wakefield who mailed his handicapped absentee ballot for Martha Coakley. Can you dial just one number today and talk to someone?
...
I am very angry. I have not been this angry for years, and most of my anger is directed at the Coakley campaign. I realize this creates a dissonance with my desperate plea for help for Martha Coakley. What happened here in Massachusetts surprised a lot of experts. But from December 8th through January 6th, here in the Massachusetts 8th (the fighting eighth), I never saw a single advertisement for Martha Coakley. Cambridge and Somerville are covered with Barack Obama bumper stickers (and Impeach Bush bumper stickers). I have yet to see a single Martha Coakley bumper sticker. Despite belonging to OFA, I was never contacted by the Coakley campaign. And I watched with that horror that We democrats know all too well as a an opponent defined himself without intervention. The late Ted Kennedy was always out there campaigning no matter how safe his seat was.
Will you let Massachusetts Democrats out there know that we still have their back?
Over 100 people committed to taking action in Femlaw's wonderful, hope filled diary.
I'm asking you to drop everything and either become a volunteer or help mobilize and support other people to volunteer -- or both. And this is one of those times where you can truly be of service from right here at your computer. This is a call for a massive, digital visibility campaign to recruit volunteers for Coakley's GOTV operation.
slinkerwink fired up the troops
Let me tell you--phone calls work. They help, and I know it's scary making phone calls from home to people you don't know, but you can take just a few minutes of your time to make calls. I ask you to please do it for Martha Coakley and me, because I'm deaf and can't make calls. If I could hear, I'd spend all day calling.
Kath25 made a call for out of state volunteers
Right now, we need to put our policy differences and attitudes about Obama aside, and protect Teddy Kennedy's seat.
We can provide the grassroots support so badly needed in Massachusetts right now. So if you can go to Massachusetts in the next three days, this diary is to help you facilitate travel arrangements and logistics once there.
AnotherMassachusettsLiberal did visibility for Coakley.
I'm the co-chair of the Elections Committee for my local Democratic Town Committee - we held standouts all over town today. It's a beautiful day today, sunny and almost 50 degrees - seven of us gathered on the sidewalk outside our Post Office, a very busy spot on Saturday mornings. Our state rep had signs, and he coordinated five other standouts all over town. As far as I know, there were no standouts for Brown, several folks who were out running errands stopped by to tell us that they hadn't seen anything for him.
Paul Loeb reminded us why phonebanking matters
It's easy to think of our individual election volunteering as insignificant. But when enough of us act even in small ways, we can have a powerful impact. Studies have found that if you talk to a dozen people by going door-to-door, you'll likely add at least one new voter for your candidate, a ratio that tends to hold true from local to federal elections, so long as you're working in reasonably receptive neighborhoods. Phone outreach can have a similar impact, though you need to talk with more people for a comparable result.
WarrenS shared his story of phonebanking.
I've done bits and pieces of phonebanking over the past few days. The terrifying polls forced me back into (!!!!)election(!!!!) mode, so I signed up for the campaign's "Neighbor-to-neighbor" program, making calls from home. That started on Wednesday, and I continued over this week. Today I left the house and went to the basement of a local realtor's office and did collective phoning using a predictive dialing system.
Brainwarp chipped in $25 for Coakley
And no, like most of us, I'm not exactly overflowing with money these days.
HOWEVER, this Brown character sounds like a true scumbag, and Coakley does appear to be extremely competent at her job (if not campaigning for it), and seems like she'd be a very good U.S. Senator as well, so I've done what little I can.
While money is less important in the final few days of a campaign than boots on the ground, it still never hurts, so there you go.
bkamr and her teenage son dug deep and gave what they could to the campaign
We'd already sent the "extra" $50 we had to the Clinton Foundation. Sadly, I put my wallet back in my purse, vowing to call even more, when my son came back in the room. Frankly, I had been so distracted that I hadn't even heard him leave the kitchen.
"Here, Mom. I have $2.00."
He's 13.
We live in Kentucky.
But, he understands what 60 in the Senate means.
As I looked at his face, I took my wallet back out of my purse and added a 10 to his 2 crumpled bills. They all went into an envelope marked "bank" to cover our $12.00 donation for Coakley.
They all get the stakes. They are all leaving it all on the road. Will you?
The Coakley campaign is being outspent $2.2 million to $1.9 million on TV ads in the last week.
