Congress needs to address the potentially dangerous situation the Supreme Court created by removing campaign ad regulations today.
The laws written by Congress addressing money being used to influence political campaigns never historically took into consideration the influence of funds coming from outside this country. The decision by the Supreme Court has potentially opened up a venue for foreign money to be injected into the American political process, with little oversight and control.
Imagine, Saudi Arabia and communist mainland China, and little countries like Vietnam or even Iran [now wouldn't that be hilarious] from pumping in their billions of dollars to get their Manchurian Candidates in position.
I remember feeling vaugely sick to my stomach, reading through some mag [I think it was National Geographic] that had a huge mulitpage ad spread singing the praises of Saudi Arabia. Must I have them on my TeeVee, too?
Smooth move, Scalia, Alito, Roberts, Thomas, Kennedy.
Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate Republican leader, praised the court for "restoring the First Amendment rights". So glad to hear that McConnell supports funds coming in from outside the United States to effect political discourse.
By removing this firewall, the Supreme Court has eviscerated some of the protections we have from foreign persons, companies, and even foreign governments that have partial ownership of US companies from influencing elections.
Brilliant!
First thing Congress must do is put back in place is some way of preventing foreign funding of these ads.
One would think the right wing would be all up in arms about this possibility, that oh .. let's just take an example .. the Bin-Laden family could fund campaign ads. Must be that they're too damn dense and hypnotized from listening to Jabba the Hut to figure it out for themselves.
