I was going to totally remove myself from politics and blogs after the Massachusetts loss (Who’s most responsible? The idiot voters of Massachusetts. Yeah, Coakley was a stiff, but what exactly do the Republicans have to do? Actually come by & burn the house down and/or steal the money right out of your hand? Massies have, of course, almost universal coverage. Yeah, it’s slowly bankrupting their state, but hey, who cares about that? The Brown voters of Mass have totally validated what my family considered the ethos of the 00s: "I’ve got mine, fuck you." And, nice way to pay back Kennedy for his many, many years of service. He never gave up on Massachusetts, but they sure gave up on him .. and his life’s work).
Yeah, I was going to just walk away, because I could see the Democrats were going to go into full panic mode. Sure enough they have. I just couldn’t watch these idiots flub this again. Christ, an 18 seat majority in the Senate and, what, 50 or so in the House? What can’t these people screw up? No wonder America loathes them (even when they vote for them). Right now, I loathe them too. It’s enough to make me actually feel my blood pressure rising. Good thing I have low blood pressure. It reminded me of the 2004 election. I had to drop out for a while back then too. This time, I just couldn’t deal with it again.
And yeah, I’m going to rag on Obama. FUCK Obama! I understand that his whole life history has proved that nice guys finish first. I mean he got the right school, the right girl, the Presidency for God’s sake, by being a nice guy. I actually personally like Obama, but this guy isn’t my friend or co-worker. He’s my President. Show some Goddamn leadership. What the hell’s the problem? Just pass that stupid Senate bill and the yapping heads that make up our plutocracy will shut the hell up. Then, maybe (but doubtfully), it can be amended via reconciliation. I doubt that will happen, but at this point, it really is better than nothing.
And whoever is going to rag on me for being a troll. Shut Up! I spent hours upon hours toiling away as a Democratic delegate for my state the last go-around. The party was completely overwhelmed by the turnout & it was possibly one of the worst experiences of my life, but I suffered through it because I wanted to try & do something. I also have donated a fair amount of cash to the Obama & the party, so just don’t start.
So, that was early yesterday. Then our Supreme Court, made up of a majority of men who apparently hate this country and want to destroy it, put out that dangerous & bizarre decision. I mean I understand principle, but you would think that a Supreme Court justice would also have some slight acknowledgment of real life. These guys all act like this is some football game & they’re rooting for the team (Go republicans, go republicans!, Just like Go Florida! or Go Notre Dame!). They seem to think it’s only that consequential. What a bunch of immature jerks. Keith Olbermannn made the very scary worse case scenario last night. I don’t know how bad it will get, but as Olbermann pointed out last night, it was only 4 or 5 years between the awful Dred Scott decision and the Civil War. I think that all of us Daily Kos-ters, as I like to call everyone here, have long since admitted that Congress and this country is seriously out of whack.
Is it possible that this is the point where we have to admit we have to change the Constitution? I guess time will tell if that’s true, but I’m wondering if anyone else thinks the time has come?
It would take the shape of saying that a straight majority + 1 passes anything: bills, nominations, treaties, anything. This super-majority bullshit has to end. I don’t care if the Republicans force many crappy laws on us when their time comes back around. Most of the laws that Democrats pass are actually popular and tend to stick around.
Secondly, we have to remove the status of corporation "personhood." And take the ridiculous amount of cash sloshing around out of our election system.
Looking at the Constitutional requirements below, I figure that the chance of amending it is slim to none. But at this point, I think it’s time to put it out there. Ideas have power, even for the powerless. This community is big enough, angry enough, and committed enough to start the ball rolling.
Whew, I feel better. Maybe this ranting thing can be healthy!
The new amendment may be approved by two-thirds of both houses of Congress, then sent to the states for approval. (Why did I even write this? Never going to happen. But I can dream).
Two-thirds of the state legislatures may apply to Congress for a constitutional convention to consider amendments, which are then sent to the states for approval. (Highly doubtful, but possible).
Congress may require ratification by special convention. The convention method has been used only once, to approve the 21st Amendment (repealing prohibition, 1933). (The best shot).
Regardless of the method of proposing an amendment, final ratification requires approval by three-fourths of the states.
