An incredible 98 House Democrats have signed the Polis-Pingree letter since last week -- calling on Harry Reid to pass the public health insurance option through "reconciliation," which only needs a simple majority to pass the Senate.
This momentum is thanks in large part to tens of thousands of people who called their local House Democrat and asked them to sign.
The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (where I'm a campaigner), Democracy for America, and Credo Action set up WhipCongress.com where you can see if your representative has signed the letter -- and if not, call them. (We give you a script, it's easy.)
We're trying to reach 100 signers today -- and today's officially the last day for them to sign. Can you help?
Numerous congressional offices have said our calls so far made a huge difference -- your call today will too.
This effort has been spearheaded by freshmen -- yet none of the 10 freshman Democrats who our polling shows are in danger of losing their seat if they don't support the public option have signed on. They are:
Betsy Markey (CO-4)
Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24)
Mark Schauer (MI-7)
Larry Kissell (NC-8)
Martin Heinrich (NM-1)
Harry Teague (NM-2)
Steve Driehaus (OH-1)
Mary Jo Kilroy (OH-15)
John Boccieri (OH-16)
Tom Perriello (VA-5)
PCCC/DFA polling in these 10 vulnerable districts shows:
* 68% of voters want a public health insurance option
* By 5 to 1, voters want their Representative to fight to add the public option over simply passing the Senate bill
* By 3 to 1, persuadable voters are less likely to vote for local Democrat if Congress doesn't pass a public option as part of reform
* 52% of Democrats less likely to vote in 2010 if Congress doesn't pass public option -- Republicans more likely
Can you help call House Democrats today and ask them to sign the Polis-Pingree letter? Click here.
Last week 0 members of Congress were on the record supporting the public option through reconciliation -- today, thanks to people-power, it's nearly 100. Thanks for doing your part.
P.S. If you haven't already joined 225,000 others in signing the petition for a public option through reconciliation, you can do so here.
