This may sound like an oxymoron - but it's probably the best way to describe my beliefs right now.
As a man, I was raised in a Democratic Protestant family and have been progressively Pro-Choice for most of my life... until I had my son and witnessed the miracle of life first hand.
As our wonderful President would say, let's have a discussion and focus on what we agree on, and not on what we disagree. And as he said at Notre Dame, "So let us work together to reduce the number of women seeking abortions, let's reduce unintended pregnancies."
Throughout most of my life, being raised a Democrat and voting as one, I've been Pro-Choice.
Throughout my wife's pregnancy of our fist child and his birth I've been drifting into the Pro Life category. * (big disclaimer below)
Watching our baby through the ultrasounds, hearing the heartbeat early in the first trimester, discovering how soon the baby starts to look like a human, and of course the birth of our son which is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me - has all changed and nudged my viewpoint.
Yes now I do think "life" begins very early in a pregnancy.
Now since that has become my belief - how am I progressively pro life?
Well let's start with why people get an abortion?
One of the main reasons women get an abortion because they don't feel like they can raise their child.
Why do women possibly feel like this?
Because our country could give a rats ass about you once you are born.
*All of the right "pro-life"ers only care about the baby in the womb - don't care about the baby once he/she leaves it.
In France, when you have a child, a nurse comes to your house once a week to help you. In countries with single payer health you have the health support you need.
In Germany you get 2-3 years paid maternity leave.
In the United States you get..... jack squat.
That's why I'm progressively pro-life.
If we actually cared about babies in this country once they're outside of the womb - most women won't feel the need to get an abortion.
I'm all for birth control, I'm all for the morning after pill (as it isn't abortion) - I'm not not sure anymore how I feel about the rest any more...
