Last month Republicans in the Minnesota House overwhelmingly supported a bill to fund General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) a program that provides health care to the poorest of Minnesota's poor. All of the Republicans who voted for GAMC last month voted against it today. There had been no changes in the bill. It would cost less than what will happen without its passage and it covers more people. So why didn't Republicans vote for the bill this time? Because Governor Tim Pawlenty (also a Republican) had vetoed it.
Representative David Bly (DFL- Northfield, MN) says it is hard to trust Republicans in negotiations over health care for the poor when their leader, Governor Tim Pawlenty, has said he wants to "take a 9 iron to government spending" and poor people are at the other end of that 9-iron.
After the jump, the Republican response. You have to see this.
And the Republican response? In an attempt to justify her vote against overriding Governor Pawlenty's veto of General Assistance Medical Care, Representative Laura Brod (Republican, New Prague, MN)says government is not moral or compassionate -- people are.
The push back on "morality" continued from Rep. Tony Cornish (Republican) who explains his justification for voting down the GAMC veto override and his church going habits… as well as some cussing.
