in Washinton DC...
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to block the District of Columbia's gay marriage law, freeing the city to issue its first marriage licenses to same-sex couples the following day.
I was suprised to hear of this. Its fantastic news for all the gay and lesbians in Wahington.
"It has been the practice of the court to defer to the decisions of the courts of the District of Columbia on matters of exclusively local concern," said Roberts, writing for the court.
It feels very strange to be in an agreement with Justice Roberts but no matter what his personal stance on the matter his, this was the correct legal decision.
And now it lets all loving couples, who happen to be of the same sex, apply for marriage licenses starting tomorrow.
The homphobics will no doubt find another way to challenge this and they are asking city councils to initiate a voter refrendum on this. So this will not be the final battle in this long going war to get full rights for the citizens of this country.
And its only one area of the country. I had orginally said state but was reminded by Colo Tim that Washington DC is under federal control. I did know that but forgot. Thanks for reminding me Colo Tim.

Thanks guys for rec'ring this. I am overwhelmed. I feel very deeply about this issue. I want all americans to have the same rights as I do. I think its outrageous that even though I am not a citizen, that I can marry whomever I want and thousands of americans cannot just becuase they are in love with someone of their own sex.
Its even made the news in New Zealand:
