Not much to say about this except: Georgia is in play in 2010!
Some new polling results from Public Policy Polling show former Governor Roy Barnes (D) leading all three likely candidates from the GOP side.
[Current Governor - R] Sonny Perdue’s approval ratings have fallen in the tank, and Roy Barnes leads the top Republican candidates in his bid to replace the man who defeated him for reelection eight years ago.
Perdue’s approval rating is now just 29%, with 52% of voters in the state disapproving of him. His support is significantly diminished among Republicans, with 44% of them approving of him and 36% disapproving. With Democrats and independents his approval has really collapsed- he gets good marks from just 15% and 28% respectively within those two groups.
Barnes has a 40/39 lead over John Oxendine, a 41-36 one over Karen Handel, and a 43-38 one over Nathan Deal. Those leads are a little misleading because more Republicans are undecided than Democrats in each of the three match ups. That may be a product of Barnes being better known than any of the Republican candidates, and it means the race will probably get tighter once the Republicans have a nominee.
Barnes lost his re-election bid for two reasons: He lost the support of teachers, and he changed the Georgia flag to remove the noxious Confederate emblem added during the early days of the Civil Rights era.
Although he once said he was done with politics, his trial balloons for the Democratic nominate were well received, and he's certain to be our nominee. Previous polling showed him behind but competitive - these latest results are reason to get fired up!
