Hi. I'm Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State and I'm running for U.S. Senate.
Today has a certain surreal feel. After debating health care reform for a year, through the ups and through the downs, we are mere hours away from passing meaningful -- albeit imperfect -- health care reform.
I had hoped that the Senate and House would include the public option in order to ensure competition and reduce prices. For many reasons it wasn't to be, but I am encouraged. The CBO made clear the power of this bill earlier this week: it will reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion and extend coverage to 32 million Americans, 95% of the population -- that is an opportunity to deliver change we cannot pass up.
That is why I am urging the House to finish the job today.
Deliver on your promise to get things done and do right by the America people.
But remember, while this is an important step forward -- it isn't the end. The dominating issues will surely change, but we must remember -- and elect leaders who understand -- that the fight goes on. There is much work left to do on this important issue, and let's not forget that.
Thank you.
Elaine
P.S. If you'd like to get involved in my campaign, we are quickly approaching the end of the quarter and a contribution of $5 or more can go a long way in elected a bold Senator from North Carolina.
