At least for one single day, can we savor the moment? Can we smell the coffee without any distraction? Does every good thing have to be followed by a bad one?
There are very few times in life when an endeavor takes a century to accomplish like what happened today. What are so many of us focusing on today? What the republicans reaction to signing the HCR bill is. I'm sorry people, I don't care what they say because it's nothing new.
Today is a day for celebrating life. The life of people who now have access to health care who could not get it before. Even if it only helps a few, the effort, the fight we just went through, all of us, pro and con, led to this moment in history. We just witnessed history, and all many people of goodwill want to do is dwell what the opposition is doing.
When the Civil Rights bill was passed in 1964, do you think we were wondering what Lester Maddox or George Wallace said? I remember LBJ signing the bill, I don't remember a damn word at all what any of those racists were saying that day, now almost 46 years later. If you are that interested in what republicans or anti-HCR antagonists are doing or saying today, then maybe you really do not understand the magnitude of what just happened today. Millions of people will benefit from what happened today. Isn't that more important to dwell on than what Mike Pence or Glenn Beck says on March 23, 2010. When everyone looks back at this day 15 years from now, will you remember what any republican did today, or will the memory be the beaming face of President Obama and Speaker Pelosi? Your choice, bad memory or good.
Update: OK, I can see that no matter how happy one can be, there will always be the downers. So here is my take on today. I am witnessing history. Like Social Security and the Civil Rights Act, this is not a perfect bill. Satisfied everyone? There are weaknesses to this bill. It has to be tweaked, and over time, it will, so, realizing this bill is an ugly duckling compared to Beyonce, we really should start thinking more positively about things and stop obsessing about everything negative, especially from those other people who will never let us strive for equality. Today was an important first step. It's not the last step, but at least we got to this step. No one is going to succeed in turning my smile into a frown today. I deserve to smile today, and so do many of you.
