Pelosi Statement on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Policy
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to a letter sent this afternoon by Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Robert Gates concerning the repeal of the "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" policy:
"We all look forward to the report on the review of the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy by the Defense Department. In the meantime, the Administration should immediately place a moratorium on dismissals under this policy until the review has been completed and Congress has acted."
This is clearly a response from Congress regarding Robert Gates letter recommending Congress not act this year on repealing "Don't ask, don't tell" legislation. That news was devastating to hopes for repeal.
I'm guessing, Nancy Pelosi, like most people who are realistic and being genuine recognize attaching repeal to this year's military budget is the only realistic solution for repealing this awful law anytime soon.
Though it's been mentioned they'd vote on it "later" I have yet to see anyone actually give any serious description of what the legislative strategy of "later" looks like.
Good on Nancy. This is great statement, and an awesome line in the sand for her to be drawing. It's been a rollercoaster day.
Update 1: Some may also have seen Adam B's Front page news that PA Representative Patrick Murphy came out swinging for a repeal vote this year today as well. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also expressed her respectful disagreement with Gates and called for repeal to move forward. I've written before here, and here, about rumblings of a Democratic revolt over delaying DADT repeal, I am coming to think there may be some truth to them.
