First, no, I'm not an oil expert (any more than any other addict is an expert about the drug he's hooked on), just someone who's a bit confused right now regarding some questions surrounding the BP Gulf oil disaster that are not only not being answered, but as far as I can tell, aren't even being asked.
Question #1:
Given the exponentially increasing estimates of the magnitude of the spill and of the output of the broken well, it appears that this catastrophe is fully off the charts in terms of how much pressure is behind the undersea gusher. Is the mere possibility of containment (short of the well playing itself out) just more wishful thinking of the variety that has allowed our species to take the planet to the environmental precipice we now stand before and gape at?
Question #2:
The Cheney Energy Task Force, that the Supreme Court allowed to be shielded from public scrutiny, executed, among many other travesties, the evisceration of offshore drilling regulations. Given Obama's mandate for change and given the failure of the Interior Department to even revisit those gutted regulations (as well as its failure to interdict dangerous and clearly illegal coal mining practices) why hasn't Ken Salazar's resignation been demanded, along with his deputies responsible for oversight of these rapacious and disaster-prone industries?
Question # 3
If this disaster is really a random act of Nature (as industry shills would have us believe) why hasn't Pat Robertson come out to declare this was an act of God's vengeance on the Bible-believing Southern region of the United States for their heedless disregard for, and venal manipulation of, the resources on this, God's awesome planetary creation - as well as for their failure to disregard his directive to "be good stewards of the Earth"?
Question # 4
Will the upcoming rapid escalation of gas prices to the $10/gal range wake us up?
Question #5
Is anybody talking, in relation to this ongoing catastrophe, about the upcoming hurricane season?
