I wrote a diary about the Nelson amendment and said it was in fact as bad as Stupak's but merely more subtle. A quote from my first diary of the same name:
The Nelson amendment would be a law limiting {abortion} access by fiscal means. The Nelson amendment was voted down by the senate then reinserted back into the bill by the managers amendment.
Once again I don't matter, once again I'm being stupid and its only a slight give away anyway.
Once again myself and 159 million other Americans are being asked to shelve our rights for others.
There were some doubters in the comments, and I will repeat:
Financial constraints can be nearly as effective as banning abortion via legislation. The Hyde amendment went part of the way down this road, the Nelson amendment seems to be taking it the rest of the way.
The richer among us will always be able to have access to family planning, the poorest who need it most will not.
The result of this pile of fecal matter:
Well there is always one way to cure the problem for sure:
Hey presto:
WASHINGTON — Abortion opponents fought passage of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul to the bitter end, and now that it's the law, they're using it to limit coverage by private insurers.
An obscure part of the law allows states to restrict abortion coverage by private plans operating in new insurance markets. Capitalizing on that language, abortion foes have succeeded in passing bans that, in some cases, go beyond federal statutes.
Why fight Roe v Wade when you can just circumvent it, if you cant afford an abortion in our overpriced hospitals and you cant get medical insurance then:
So when I was told the image below was over the top
Actually I was right and hence I repeat its fair use, Nelson was to me merely a more subtle version of Stupak-Pitts.
Since Obama signed the legislation law March 23, Arizona and Tennessee have enacted laws restricting abortion coverage by health plans in new insurance markets, called exchanges. About 30 million people will get their coverage through exchanges, which open in 2014 to serve individuals and small businesses.
So if you could afford private health insurance in the first place you can still get insurance, fine I'm OK. However this removal from the exchanges that were designed to bring the costs down for those who couldn't afford the insurances before, removes affordability for abortion cover. Its as effective as banning abortion for poor women, how many are there in the 30 million that will be dealt with via the exchanges?
You see what many people seem to forget is that when you give the right an inch they will take a mile.
"You are going to see more actions like this," said Tom McClusky, a lobbyist for the socially conservative Family Research Council. "This is not something we are just going to let fall by the wayside."
Religious pharmacists who let their religion interfere with their professional duty already refuse to sell the morning after pill, with its obvious repercussions.
The fact that Nelson's retrograde amendment was not stripped out of the final bill will come to haunt many women across our land. I screamed against it for a very good reason then, because you just know the right will never give up until we are barefoot, pregnant, and chained to the sink.
"Florida has always been pretty much of a middle-of-the road state," said Stephanie Kunkel, executive director of Planned Parenthood's affiliates in the state. "If Florida passes it, it could really open up more moderate states to passing these bans."
Conservatives say they won't forgive a Crist veto. "You can count him as done if he vetoes this bill before him now," said McClusky of the Family Research Council.
It was easier to fight the amendment before it became law, now we have to fight all over again.
I am fucking tired of having the same fights over and over especially when we had got so far. it really doesn't help when our side enables the religious loons via another loophole.
To those who demand:
No, I will never shut the fuck up:
Its time to repeal:
The Hyde Amendment
The Nelson Amendment
Its time to uphold the principles of:
Roe v Wade
If you take the right to choose away by fiscal means, then there is in fact no choice.
.
Just stay away from my body and my rights, and everything will be just fine.
Have a great day
Alessandra.
