the AP just put down an alert saying that Egypt will temporarily suspend its part of the gaza blockade for aid.
(Edit) it seems i got confused between the naval blockade, and the border blockade. Egypt seems to be lifting the land blockade, not the naval one. sorry about the confusion.
I don't have a ton of details other than that AP line...
I know this is not a diary at this point, but I will be updating this with more sources and reaction at they come in...
Personal Opinion - Love the idea of getting aid in, but how will Egypt confirm it's aid? Would it really be that hard to have the ships searched quickly by a third party (pick a country, any country) and then let it into the port? isn't that a decent compromise. aid gets in, weapons do not.
UPDATE 1 -
GAZA, June 1 (Reuters) - Egypt opened its border with the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, letting Palestinians cross until further notice amid a storm of international criticism of Israel's blockade of the enclave, officials in Egypt and Gaza said.
Egypt's Rafah crossing point is the only border post from Gaza that is not fully controlled by Israel. Cairo has opened it only sparingly since Hamas Islamists, who are allied to Egypt's opposition, seized control in Gaza three years ago. (Jerusalem newsroom)
Update 2 source
"Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has given orders to open the Rafah border crossing to allow humanitarian and medical aid into the Gaza Strip, as well as to receive medical cases which require access to Egyptian territory," MENA said.
"This comes as part of Egypt's moves to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip."
According to Egyptian security sources in Rafah, the border opened on Tuesday at 1.30 pm (1030 GMT). There has been no set date for its closure.
The Rafah border crossing, the only way into Gaza that bypasses Israel, is kept closed by Egypt most of the time. Cairo allows the opening of the border two days a week for humanitarian cases.
UPDATE 3 -
CAIRO (AP) - An Egyptian official says the government is
temporarily lifting its blockade of the Gaza Strip to allow aid
into the area a day after Israel raided an international flotilla
carrying supplies to the Palestinian territory and killed nine
activists.
The governor of northern Sinai, Murad Muwafi, says President
Hosni Mubarak ordered the opening of the border crossing to Gaza in
the town of Rafah for several days.
Muwafi says the opening of the crossing - which Egypt sealed
after Gaza was taken over by Hamas militants in 2007 - is an effort
to "alleviate the suffering of our Palestinian brothers after the
Israeli attack" on the flotilla.
UPDATE 4 - thank you for the rec list. please note the edit on top, this is the land border, not the naval blockade. i think i have all the facts in there, and 3 sources. i'm going to refrain from commenting in the diary, well because while i like news updates, i don't agree with many people here on I/P. So all of you have fun.
