I just got this email from Democracy for America:
I'm here in Arkansas helping lead Bill Halter's Get-Out-The-Vote drive. So, I'm going to cut straight to the point.
Winning this won't be easy.
Blanche Lincoln has pulled out all the stops -- outspending by millions on T.V. -- and called in all her favors -- even convincing Bill Clinton to campaign down here and bash unions and progressives for supporting Bill Halter.
This won't be easy, but we will win this if you make calls to identified Bill Halter supporters in Arkansas and ask them to get out and vote right now.
Yes, I can make calls right now!
Yes, I can make calls tonight!
Yes, I can make calls tomorrow too!
Did I mention they want people to phonebank?
As the email reminds us, Lincoln is doing everything she can to hold on to her Senate seat. And I don't think anyone needs a reminder of the recent polling site shenanigans in Garland County, but what the hell:
To sum up, the Garland County Election Commission decided some time in March that if a runoff election occurred, they would open only 2 polling locations for the runoff out of over 40 polling locations used for the primary. While I currently am unsure of when anyone in either campaign was aware of this, I do know that this became a hot issue on Friday when word spread of the possible disenfranchisement of thousands of voters in Garland County.
Many people, including people here, made calls to the election commission and asked that they open more polling locations. Bill Halter himself marched down to the commission's office with his supporters and got the commission to agree to open one polling location on Saturday to help the situation. However, on Saturday (today) morning, no polling locations were open as hundreds of voters were unable to vote when they arrived.
The Garland County Election Committee Chairman, Charles Tapp, who had promised a voting location would be open today explained that he was forbade by law from opening the voting location.
The only real important point there is that Garland County is a Bill Halter stronghold and they will only have two polling locations for Monday and Tuesday. This is totally leave-it-all-on-the-road time and Halter truly needs everything we've got.
So I hope everyone can make a few calls for the campaign. This is now critically important in light of the polling fiasco, as the local volunteers' on-the-ground GOTV work just got a lot harder. If we can take the phonebanking load off of them, they can can focus on getting people out to the polls that are in entirely inconvenient locations for them.
If you are local and can help the campaign with on-the-ground GOTV, please let them know. Bring a friend; make an adventure of it! And please write a letter to the editor and pray it gets published tomorrow! Bill Halter currently Lincoln by 3 points in polling; these last few days in Garland County are critically important.
