Ok, good. Now that that's out of my system, how many of us knew that the uphill battle to unseat top tier loon Michele Bachmann just got a little bit easier? Well, it did. Dr Maureen Reed went ahead and did the right thing. Rather than cement her status as a Republican enabler (see Pawlenty, Tim for more on that), she dropped out of the race leaving Tarryl Clark as the lone Democratic challenger for MN-06. This may seem like a pretty insignificant development, but a brief look at what happened in 2008 shows that this is important.
In 2008, Elwyn Tinklenberg lost to Bachmann in a race that was closer than anybody expected despite only having about 3 months to campaign for the general election due to MN's late primaries. Not only this, but he only had money to campaign against her for about a month. Tink's coffers were quite empty until Michele had her Hardball meltdown, and went into full McCarthy mode. In this one month of money Tink was able to create a close race and went down swinging falling just a few percentage points short. This time things can be different.
With Reed's withdrawal, Clark now has nearly 6 full months to campaign against Bachmann. This is extremely helpful, but it's not enough. She needs money, too. The netroots have fallen asleep on this race with many believing MN-06 is a lost cause, and handful even thinking Bachmann is good for America since she makes Republicans look bad. We shouldn't have to wait for Bachmann to say something ridiculous to wake up. She has already said and done enough to deserve our full ire. We need the post Hardball type moneybomb early this time around so Clark can hit the campaign trails and show MN-06ers why she is the better choice to represent them.
Knowing Bachmann, she'll probably try to make this a national race by railing against Pelosi and Obama. She thinks it's a winning strategy in a conservative district, but we've seen this backfire in many ways this past year. Numerous tea party candidates tried this same approach in special elections over the past couple of months only to find that voters care more about their district than what Nancy Pelosi is doing in Washington.
This is why Tarryl Clark can win. She represents the Saint Cloud district in the Minnesota Senate. She knows the district, and has won an election despite it's rightward lean. She needs help, though. Our help. I've gotten the ball rolling with $50 heading Tarryl's way. Do you have $5-$10 you can send? Skip the coffee house, and brew it at home today. A $5 anvil to Bachmann is totally worth it.
