*Clarification from Joe Klein: Gen. McChrystal as "offered to resign" he has NOT submitted his resignation.

News is still unconfirmed beyond Joe Klein's original tweet - as of 5:35pm EST

CNN reports that General Stanley McChrystal has tendered his resignation according to a Joe Klien tweet http://twitter.com/...

Jibber jabber - I'll remove this diary as soon as a more meaty diary goes up.

Is this going to work in favor for the President, or will the narrative be spun into "You can't fire me, I quit"?

Will this be an opening for a sea-change of strategy in Afghanistan, or will there be a continuation of current policy.

UPDATE

Toby Harnden Blogs via Telegraph.co.uk
A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.

The source said that among the names being touted as possible successors are General James Mattis, the outgoing head of the US Joint Forces Command and due to retire after being passed over as US Marine Corps commander, and Lieutenant General William Caldwell, commander of Nato’s Training Mission in Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama says Gen. Stanley McChrystal showed "poor judgment" in a magazine story in which the Afghanistan war commander and his aides disparaged the president and other members of the administration.

Asked whether he would fire McChrystal, Obama said he planned to talk McChrystal face-to-face before making any decision.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
