You've probably heard of Sharron Angle. She's been nominated by her party to challenge Harry Reid for his Senate seat in Nevada. And while I'm no fan of Reid, I might just send him a contribution. Because his opponent is nuts.
But the North Carolina GOP has outdone their counterparts out west.
Okay, it's North Carolina. Maybe it's not "news" that there's a seriously disturbed individual running for a GOP seat there. But that's only because we've seriously defined down the definition of "nut":
Republican William "Bill" Randall won a convincing victory in Tuesday’s primary runoff, beating Raleigh businessman Bernie Reeves for the GOP nomination in the state’s 13th Congressional district.
Why is that noteworthy, you ask? Because not so very long ago, William "Bill" Randall would have been unelectable by either party. And quite possibly confined for his own safety.
But that's only because he espouses views that are detached from reality.
My thanks to Talking Points Memo for alerting me to this disturbed man:
You see, according to Bill Randall -- candidate for the Republican nomination in North Carolina's 13th district -- what happened in the Gulf involves a conspiracy between BP and the highest levels of the federal government.
Yes, it's official. The Republicans have found a candidate nuttier than Sharron Angle. Randall's opponent, Democrat Brad Miller, reportedly doesn't have much to fear from him in November, and that's a very comforting thought. But we still must ponder the fact that Randall was able to gain the nomination of his party while saying shit like this:
He told reporters that the political pickle the White House has found itself in over the BP spill isn't due to the administration's poorly-timed (in hindsight, anyway) advocacy for increased off-shore drilling three weeks before the well blew up. It's because their scheme with BP to pour oil into the Gulf of Mexico for whatever reason worked a little too well.
In case you're tired of Obama supporters tirelessly granting the President superhuman powers, you can always turn to GOP conspiracy theorists, who grant him even greater powers:
"[I]t got beyond what was anticipated, and we had an explosion and loss of life," Randall told reporters. "And, oh man, then we have panic. Is there a cover up going on? I'm not saying there necessarily is. But I think there's enough facts on the table for people that (they) really need to do some investigative research and find out what went on with that and get a subpoena of records and everything else."
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your modern GOP.
Utterly detached from reality. Getting their "ideas" from a junkie radio host. And quite proud of it.
And getting their party's nomination for the United States House of Representatives.
