The Huffington Post is running a story about an interview that Sharron Angle gave in January in which sheopposes abortion even for rape and incest.. Somehow that wasn't the worst of what she said, more below the fold:
In January of 2010 Sharron Angle gave an interview to the Bill Manders show which had the following exchange:
Manders: I, too, am pro life but I'm also pro choice, do you understand what I mean when I say that.
Angle: I'm pro responsible choice. There is choice to abstain choice to do contraception. There are all kind of good choices.
Manders: Is there any reason at all for an abortion?
Angle: Not in my book.
Story continues below
Manders: So, in other words, rape and incest would not be something?
Angle: You know, I'm a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.
(Quote from Huffington Post)
Obviously this view is far outside of the mainstream, not just in liberal circles, but often even our conservative counterparts stop short of calling for a prohibition of abortion for victims of rape and incest (not always, but I think that is the mainstream view). There could, and almost certainly will be diaries writen about how much is wrong with the prohibition of abortion in cases of rape and incest, but what struck me about this statement, was less the far right approach to abortion, but more the completly unsympathetic view towards the victims of rape and incest that was evident in her justification.
The final line quoted in the HuffPost article state:
(Bold added by me)
Angle: You know, I'm a Christian and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.
When I read that last bit I took it to mean that Sharron Angle believes Rape and Incest to be divine intervention. I'm not much of a writer (as you have no doubt realized for youself by this point) but the sheer idiocy and lack of compassion and basic human decency has left me at an utter loss for words.
The implications of this view extend beyond the issue of abortion and the impact of such a policy, does this mean that in Sharron Angle's opinion the victims of rape and incest are not infact victims but rather the fortunate recipient of gods intervention? More over are rapist not criminals but rather divine instrements? I find it hard to belive that any person, particuarly a woman running for senate could possibly think this way, so she is either 1) completly deranged and out of touch or 2) making a very poor attempt to feed red meat to her base, either way i'm appalled. I would say god help us if she gets elected, but if god helps the way Sharron Angle thinks he/she does......No thanks.
Side note:
This is my first attempt at a diary and I know i'm no writer, so please feel free (in fact please do) let me know of mistakes i've made including those to make sure i conform to the standards of this community, I'm might be slow to make the corrections (at work) but I will and i appreciate your comments.
