A couple of weeks ago, Senator Patty Murray's (D-WA) Republican opponent Dino Rossi was raising money at a fundraiser headlined by Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn. That same day, not coincidentally, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, acting on Senator Coburns behalf, blocked S.1237, a Patty Murray bill that would have helped homeless veteran mothers living on the street with small children.
.
Today, Senator Murray voted for financial reform. Included in the Bill was an amendment offered by Murray to specifically prevent taxpayer money from being used in future bailouts. Not included in the final bill was an amendment supported by Murray that would have capped the size of Federally insured deposits for any one bank.
The thing that prevented the cap on Federally insured deposits, of course, is the unfortunate circumstance of too many Republicans and moderate Democrats holding office in the Senate.
Senator Murray's opponent – realtor, former state senator and two time gubernatorial loser Dino Rossi – had this to say about the bill:
“Americans are tired of funding bailouts for companies who think writing big campaign checks will cover their risky business decisions,” said Rossi. “If Patty Murray is against putting Washington state taxpayers on the hook for Wall Street bailouts, she needs to vote against this bill.”
Yes, Dino, you are right that Americans are tired of funding bailouts that were caused by deregulation of the banking industry. That is why Senator Murray just helped pass a bill that would re-instate banking regulations to prevent future bailouts, with specific language contributed by Murray that will insulate taxpayers from such bailouts.
The Murray campaign had this to say:
“It seems strange that Dino Rossi took weeks to take a position on this bill without apparently having read it,” said Julie Edwards, a Murray campaign spokeswoman.
Anyone who thinks that Dino Rossi is the person that is going to stand up to big business, and Senator Murray is not, should call Dino Rossi. He has a choice piece of Gulf Coast waterfront property for sale.
