It looks as though San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is headed for a BIG win this fall, and he has this morning's Los Angeles Times to thank for it. According to the Times, our current Republican Lt. Governor Abel Maldonado's family farm, owes the federal government more than $100,000 in taxes, according to a lien filed against the property by the Internal Revenue Service earlier this year.
According to the Times, it is the ninth time since 1992 that federal, state or local tax collectors have resorted to liens against the Santa Maria Republican's family farm in an effort to collect payments totaling over $240,000. And the irony is that the IRS applied the liens two weeks prior to Schwarzenegger swore him in as Lt. Governor.
This guy is toast. Not only does this look bad at a time when the economy is a mess, and the state of California is 20 billions dollars in debt, but this guy and his family has a history of having liens applied to his property for the last 18 years.
Now I am sure he will pull the typical Rethug argument - federal and state taxes are killing family farms, etc., but the electorate knows this is bullshit.
With the angry electorate out there, and Maldonado's proven ability to pull significant votes from Latino's in his numerous Senate elections, this race was anything but a cake walk for Newsom. But not anymore.
