I learned today from the Christian Science Monitor that food stamp usage has sky rocketed. I went to the government's food and nutrition service site to look at the data myself and discovered it's up 31% since October of 2008.
The government's website only gives us data through the first quarter of 2010 (not very timely, IMO, but there may be good reasons, who knows). There are now 18,894,490 households and 40,430,421 individuals enrolled in the food stamp program, now called SNAP.
Somehow I don't think this will be posted on Fox News, unless it's a hit piece on shaming people who need help.
The data for this chart can be found here (Excel file).
I don't have much to add to this. I have not had to use food stamps in my life, and I would do it if I needed to. People's dignity continues to be stripped away from them little by little.
And today we learned Democrats dealed away some funding for the food stamp program in order to get something else, I hope it can be boiled, steamed, or stir fried. I hope they know what they are doing, and aren't stealing food out of the mouths of some very pissed off people. It's amazing how many people come out to vote when they don't have jobs.
