I work in Pioneer Square in Seattle, so I got a chance to see the President this morning wave from his stretch SUV as he raced off to a fundraiser. Listening to the fundraiser, here is a pretty darn good line I'm sure we'll hear again and again.
Using that familiar metaphor of the economy as a car that the Bush administration drove into the ditch, the President expanded on it, saying the Republicans, drinking Slurpees and watching the Democrats work in the ditch to get the car back on level ground, then ask for the keys back.
"Can't have 'em back" says the President. "You don't know how to drive." Line receives great applause.
But the kicker is next:
"You notice that when you want to move forward in your car, what do you do? You put your car in D. When you want to go backwards, you put it in R! Back into the ditch!"
After cheers and applause and a wry smile... "That's not a coincidence," he remarks.
That is the frame of the argument coming out of the White House.
