As an official old fart, gullible, old man who has had such profound...and numbing...experiences of things like war in Vietnam, Bush II, alcohol, impending dementia, etc., I wring my hands and wipe the tears from my eyes as I see stupidity, greed, cunning and disninformation destroy our nation and the fledgling culture that it represents.
What is it that we can do to disabuse every one of us of the lies and disinformation of sources such as Rush Limbough, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck et. al?
I admit to being gullible and shallow...some times still waters run deep and sometimes, as in my case, still waters are only a shallow mud puddle...but how in the Hell did a significant portion of our populace come to embrace the beliefs of the aforementioned madmen?
How is it that a significant number of Americans believe that it is wrong for a just society to embrace the wish that everyone...particularly children...are entitled to food in their stomachs, clothes upon their backs, a roof over their heads and acceptable healthcare? In a healthy society that recognizes that there will always be people who are incapable or unwilling to provide these basics for themeselves, who among us could create a significant number among us that would denounce such a philosphy?
I am so challenged in so many intellectual and emotional ways that I cannot fathom why anyone would oppose a society where everyone would be cared for regardless of their wherewithal and ability.
It seems to me that if we as a nation would ever want to be considered great that we would recognize that there will always be those among us who for very many reasons are incapable of caring for themselves need to be cared for and should be cared for. Anything less than caring for all is, in my opinion, barbaric and qualifies any society who does less for nothing more than mediocrity.
