How punchy is this line?
"Obviously, the President is a Christian"
That's Bill Burton's reply to a question about a disturbing percentage of people disputing Obama's Christian faith.
"What a disgrace! It is shameful that after two years of campaigning, after two years in power, people can no longer be fooled by smear polls. I don't dignify ignorance."
That could have been a better response. A disguised moral attack, a foxy reply veiled as a hit job and a notice to false prophets and peddlers of dumb polls.
That's how you respond to smears and not by smiling and reasoning with timidity that "obviously" he is a Christan.
If it was that obvious, the poll results will be telling a different story.
Just look at how Ari Fleischer, Bush's combative Press Secretary, who successful turned the the biggest security disaster under W. Bush into an asset for his boss. He still does that till today.
Take a look at how a good Press Secretary talks down unwanted or unfavorable question:
Compare that to a lame defense of Obama's religion as Bill Burton did a couple of days ago.
“The president is obviously a — is Christian,” Burton said on Air Force One. “He prays every day. He communicates with his religious adviser every single day. There’s a group of pastors that he takes counsel from on a regular basis. And his faith is very important to him, but it’s not something that is a topic of conversation every single day.”
This is precisely why President Obama is not getting his due credit for the actions he has so far taken. His communication and press secretaries are political midgets and in-artful in defending, driving nor conveying the message of the White House.
Who cares that President prays daily and that he consults with Christian pastors?
Bill Burton ought to dismiss the question as old recycled news. Then he should have put both the journalists and the poll pushers on notice that those who doubt the President's faith, are people who never voted for him nor will ever vote for him should should he seek re-election in 2012.
In other words, defend and attack your opponents motives.
Instead, he offered a lame rebuttal and probably smiled to the camera, hoping that it will result in favorable mainstream press reporting.
What this type of incompetence does, is to keep alive such a stupid and discredited insinuation about the President faith.
No surprise a few days later, CNN came out with a video clip of a punk pastor, Reverend Graham insinuating that President Obama, who throughout his elected offices was always sworn in using the Christian Bible is a closet Muslim.
Look at a punk pastor response to a simple question on President faith:
Powerless response always create a vacuum for a recycled old smear to stick around longer than the initial oxygen it had.
If Bill Burton had used a more forceful and combative response, both the media and their future guests will be ill-advised to touch it again.
Never mind that this punk pastor conveniently omits the faith of the President's mother. His Christian mother's faith or that of his grand parents who raised him, accounts for nothing.
Just the faith of the father he barely knew. I'm sorry for this punk pastor's congregants. Bigot, agents of intolerance and false prophet mislead folks.
Finally, President Obama has done a lot since coming to power. He is not getting his due credit because of the cast he surrounds himself with. They maybe good at getting legislative victories, but politically they are very immature as evidenced in so many electoral defeats, poor language in addressing his base of support. Yet Bill Burton's recent handling to smear poll was disgraceful and a showcase of Mr Obama poor press reviews. That's why they should either step up, resign or be fired after the mid-term election.
Let's look at how gifted basketball superstar, Michael Jordan was in his playing days with the Bulls. He had a cast of other superstars, and couldn't have done much without talents like Scottie Pipen and Dennis Rodman.
Robert Gibbs, White House Press Secretary and his Deputy, Bill Burton are not doing very well. They have pleasant personalities but time and time they have been out spun by their political opponents. In frustration, they turn against a loyal base, the "professional left"
Gibbs and Burton are doing miserable jobs. They no superstars.
President Obama needs a hardball professional, a Carville-like, loyal soldier with a machine gun who can go toe to toe with "Green Room" whack jobs who are out to destroy this President.
Going to a war with knives and pitch forks when your opponents are using machine guns, is not a genius way to fight for the hearts and minds of voters.
For instance when the mainstream media tries to push a ginned story fed to them by Fox News or their extended franchise of hate, bloggers like Drudge Reports or Big Government, as they will surely do with the President vacationing in New England, the reply should be
"Do you hate New England and the hard working Americans who reside there?"
Never play nice to their monkey games. Attack them aggressively and deny them a second news cycle on the same propaganda.
