This photo is from a gathering entitled "A Southern Experience", held by The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) in Charleston, South Carolina a few days ago. Invited speakers included John Boehner, Jim Demint, Mitch McConnell, and Governor Mark Sanford. The man in the center wistfully recalling the good ol' days is South Carolina Senate President Glenn McConnell.
Entertainment was provided for the assembled luminaries:
Apparently, the new GOP slogan is "Yassuh, we can!".
You'll probably recall the Republican Governor of Virginia declaring Confederate History Month back in April. Not to be outdone by their neighbors to the north, the South Carolina GOP has added that extra touch of realism, along with a reminder of what they truly consider great about the antebellum days. Governor Mark Sanford even presented the organization with a "certificate of appreciation".
Speaking to the Charleston Post and Courier, Glenn McConnell (the non-slave pictured in the first photo) says we shouldn't take it the wrong way:
" ... If somebody is trying to be politically correct and use a tunnel vision on it and hook in the slavery issue, they’re on a slippery slope toward narrow-mindedness and they should extend the charity of understanding. Receive it in the spirit that it is presented."
I'm sure the attendees received it in just that spirit.
