Well, no, he didn't. Not really. The inference was there though, cleverly picked up by Jon Stewart last night in his interview on O'Reilly's show. Interestingly this clip, which also mocks Karl Rove and O'Reilly himself (as a man of the people) is not included on his website, despite claims to the contrary.
O'REILLY: By the way, the entire interview with Jon Stewart unedited will be posted on BillOReilly.com immediately after this broadcast. We'll be right back with more Stewart.
Stewart pretty much dances around O'Reilly effortlessly, throwing out stinging jabs O'Reilly is just too slow or stupid to pick up on. Such as O'Reilly fears the Tea Party just as he hawks his merchandise to them, that O'Reilly can still dress up for Hallowe'en pretending to be "blue collar". And so on. Stewart even asks O'Reilly if he's even listening to him at one point.
Someone must have noticed though. You won't find these two minutes on the video or in the transcript.
Here's another bit which did make it to the website. O'Reilly asks why the left-wing doesn't go after him anymore. Has he [O'Reilly] lost his edge?
I wouldn't say brighter ... You've been overtaken by a more extreme version of you. You're like Fox 1.0. You're the beta version. Fox 2.0 has jumped over you to an extent that I don't think you could ever dream of, and, frankly, I think you fear. I think deep down inside you can't believe what you've unleashed.
See, O'Reilly thinks the two of them are just yukking it up, trading witty banter as Jon Stewart comes on to hawk his own book, and that when O'Reilly comes out with his next weighty tome Jon Stewart will reciprocate with an invitation to The Daily Show. And that part could well be true. But Jon Stewart is also playing a serious game O'Reilly is completely oblivious to. And it shows.
