I see my mother every week or so (she lives with my step-dad about 100 miles from me) and went to see her on Sunday. She turned 82 in August and has been diagnosed with dementia for a number of years. It's been getting worse and Sunday was about par for her in showing me around the house she and her husband have been in for the last 15 years, as if it were the first time I'd been there. That's what a lot of people with dementia do.
I just go with the flow with her when she's in that mode (you don't want to make like you have been there before as it only serves to remind her what she has forgotten). She's actively engaged and it passes the time and makes her feel good.
We were passing back through the kitchen after her showing me the small eat-in kitchen alcove. Looking at the days paper that was out on the center island, she saw the pictures of Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman in a preview of the upcoming debates.
She paused as she looked at the paper sitting there and said, "I may not remember a lot anymore, but I know she's a bad person" pointing to Meg's photo. She then started ponding Meg's photo with her clenched fist over and over again while saying "Bad person, bad bad person", and left the room in a huff.
That's my mom, ever the Democrat, even with dementia...
