If you've been around Daily Kos for any length of time, you probably know about the ongoing Community Quilts project spearheaded by Sara R. Her "Love Catcher" quilts, with their messages of support from community members, have brought comfort to a growing list of people facing illness and other hardship.
This month, Sara is using this brilliant and successful idea to raise money for for Jerry Brown, in his bid to beat self-financing Republican billionaire Meg Whitman in California's gubernatorial election.
Sara asked me to post a diary on behalf of this good cause, because I am, in her words, "an ex-pat Californian." I'm more than happy to help. We need your help, too, and this beautiful quilt could be yours! Read on to find out how!
I currently reside in Boston, but I grew up in the beautiful Napa Valley, and am a proud alumna of U.C. Berkeley. My husband, McDoc, was born and raised behind the Orange Curtain, but still managed to become a rabble-rousin' liberal. People we meet here in New England often ask us if we plan to return to California after McDoc completes his residency training. Honestly, we're not sure. We are worried about the state's economy, and we were embarrassed from afar when Prop 8 passed. And we don't trust Meg Whitman on either score!

We still have family in California, and we do miss the natural beauty, along with friends and relatives we'd love to see more often. I was back for a long-overdue visit last month, and for the first time since we moved away three years ago, I thought, "Hmm, maybe we could come back!"

So, how about it? Will you help Sara R's effort to contribute to Jerry Brown's campaign, thus making McDoc and I more likely to return? Every day this month, you can enter the drawing to win this beautiful quilt, either by making a donation or writing just 50 words about why you think Jerry Brown should be California's next governor. Read on for the specifics! Thanks so much!
”All Buttoned Up” – photo by Bill BachhuberThe community signed a quilt in Chicago at the 2007 Yearly Kos. It is, in a sense, a snapshot of who we were then. It could be yours!
Every day in October brings an opportunity to enter a drawing to benefit Jerry Brown’s campaign for Governor of California. Every donation of $10 or more to the fundraiser’s Act Blue page will count for a chance – one chance per person per day. You don't need to spend money to enter, however. If you are not donating, you can enter and have an equal chance of winning by writing an essay of 50 words or less on “Why I want Jerry Brown to be California’s next Governor”. Send your essay with a subject line, "Jerry Brown Essay", to communityquilts (at) yahoo (dot) com. If we find your essay topical, it will count for a chance. As with donations, one essay per person per day will count as a chance. Only one form of entry is allowed for a person on a given day.
The winning ticket of the “From Red to Blue” quilt”
At the end of the fundraiser period, I will assign a ticket number to each chance and ask a neighborhood child to pull just one ticket. The drawing will be the first week in November.
Drawing for the star quilt
Quilt stats: It is 59” square, made of cotton fabric with a cotton batting. My sister and I pieced it. I hand quilted it. The blocks feature 1930s reproduction fabric (feedsack prints) on one side, and bright, jewel toned contemporary fabrics on the other. The quilt is sleeved for hanging and would look great on your wall!
