fourthcornerman published THIS angry rant just now. I wouldn't have put it quite so bluntly, nor used quite as much profanity, but I kind of get where he's coming from.
President Obama has to try to represent 300,000,000 or so people. This includes quite a few "rednecks", right-wing bigots, etc, who I will point out are far more ignorant than stupid, for the most part. Some people can't be reached, but that doesn't mean the President should not try.
The shining example fourthcornerman uses here is DADT. Yes, President Obama could have signed an executive order on January 20th, 2009, at 12:01 PM. We would have greatly admired his courage in doing so. And then the teabaggers might have beaten him in 2012. This was always a possibility, no matter how well President Obama executes his office, given the great amount of ignorance and anger that has been ginned up over the past 22 or so months. My question to you all is, "then what?"
President Palin (or whoever) whips out her executive order signin' pen and immediately overturns the one signed by President Obama "repealing" DADT. And now you have all these gay people who are already out who have been serving in the Armed Forces for several years. They've all gotta go. Net accomplishment on Obama's part? Zero. Multiply this by any other issues you might have thought could have been dealt with by executive order.
Executive orders are temporary. Acts of Congress are more permanent. Congress needs to do its job. The President can't do it by himself. The President of the United States is not a dictator, nor a king, nor a Prime Minister or Chancellor who also runs Congress. Without the cooperation of Congress, the President is very limited in what he can do for people. If you all fail to bring Democrats home this November, you will find out very quickly what that is like. It sucks. Ask Bill Clinton how much it sucks.
And as for the wars that were ongoing since long before January 20th, 2009, President Obama wants them concluded as much as you do, preferably on terms favorable to the United States of America. Really. The wars will end, but we should all recognize, as President Obama does, that you don't just up and leave. Do that, and you'll regret it. Really.
So while I can't possibly recommend fourthcornerman's profanity and hyperbole laced screed, I generally agree with its intent. PLEASE, for the love of God (FSM, the Force, or whatever), get over whatever despair or malaise you might be feeling about the past two years and win this one for the President you helped elect. Believe me, you don't want the Republicans screwing things all up again just because you're ticked off.
