6 months ago today, the BP Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, creating the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Victims are still in need. Clean-up is not finished. The long, hard work of rebuilding our Gulf Coast and protecting our shores has only just begun.
The BP oil spill is largest maritime disaster in history. Yet Heather Beaven's opponent, John Mica, is a BP apologist who refuses to blame BP for the spill, saying, “I won’t point the finger at BP.” Instead, John Mica blamed American public servants for the spill. He voted at every opportunity to give big oil free reign over the last 18 years and then, in the face of unimaginable loss for eleven families, he uses his bully pulpit to call BP's neglect the “Obama Oil Spill” in a House committee.
We can NOT continue allowing Self-Serving Politicians like John Mica to fight for foreign-owned Big Oil while they blame American workers!
Because of John Mica’s long history and family ties to Big Oil, he isn't able to hold BP accountable. Mica’s brother is Florida’s chief oil lobbyist. His son lobbies for oil at the Fertilizer Institute, and his daughter represented the Consumers Alliance for Affordable Natural Gas and the Citizens Alliance for Energy Security, both of which lobby for expanded drilling. Big Oil is not just the Washington business; it is the Mica family business.
For over a decade John Mica was the only member of the Florida Delegation to vote to lift the ban on Florida offshore drilling. John Mica voted in the 1970’s to drill in the Everglades, saying, “I voted to drill in the Everglades in the 1970s, and I’d do it again.”
Mica has accepted over $100,000.00 from big oil. In 2000, Mica voted to drill in ANWAR. John Mica is roadblock to clean American energy.
Help Heather Fight for Clean American Energy!
As a member of Operation Free – a nationwide movement made up of veterans who believe the only way to secure America is to invest in energy independence – Heather knows we must move past our addiction to foreign oil. It is time to demand that oil companies improve their clean-up technologies and stop buying regulators and legislators with campaign contributions, trips and parties.
We should use this 6-month anniversary of the worst oil spill in our history to reflect on our shock as oil gushed for weeks. And then, we must renew our commitment to never letting this happen again. It’s time to break our dependence on oil. It’s time to understand that deep-water drilling is not safe until the cleanup is safe and effective. It’s time to elect leaders to Congress who will fight for safe, clean, renewable energy to be America’s future.
