The FBI today arrested Toms River NJ schools superintendent Michael Ritacco on corruption and fraud charges. Ritacco was an advisor on education issues to the GOP's "Superstar" Governor Chris Christie. Ironically Christie has been traveling the country promoting his education "reform" (ie. anti-teacher's union) agenda while campaigning for Republican candidates, and his been frequently mentioned as a 2012 presidential candidate.
Another aspect to this is that Ocean County NJ is a Republican bastion dominated by a powerful GOP political machine whose corruption Christie ignored while he was busting Democrats as US Attorney. Now the tables have turned as we now have a competent Democratic US Attorney willing to take on the GOP bosses who, up until now, were getting a pass from Christie.
In addition Toms River is in the highly competitive third congressional district between freshman incumbent rep. John Adler and GOP stooge Jon Runyan, a politically ignorant ex-football player whose answer to a recent question about his knowledge of Supreme Court decisions was "Dred Scott". This could have an impact in that Ritacco is inextricably linked to the corrupt GOP machine bosses who anointed Runyan as their candidate, and who gave GOP "Superstar" Chris Christie his victory margin in New Jersey. As Christie becomes a player on the national stage the stench of corruption that emanates from his political backyard may tarnish his luster.
