Here we go again.
In the wake of the electoral defeat we just experienced, we have yet another diary on the reclist that is a guide to expatriation.
To turning tail and fleeing.
To cutting and running.
Ain't America great? Yes, you can make that choice if you want to.
But is this the purpose of Daily Kos?
I say it's not. I say that this diary flies directly in the face of the site mission.
Jump if you will.
I'm going to cob some from the last diary I did on a similar subject.
From the FAQ:
This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together. We happily embrace centrists like NDN's Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama. Liberal? Yeah, we're around here and we're proud. But it's not a liberal blog. It's a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory. And since we haven't gotten any of that from the current crew, we're one more thing: a reform blog. The battle for the party is not an ideological battle. It's one between establishment and anti-establishment factions. And as I've said a million times, the status quo is untenable
As the rhetoric in the diary in question is nothing like as vitriolic and contemptuous as that in the diary that generated my LAST objection to this sort of thing, (which has since been deleted by its author), I will do my best to refrain from personally attacking the diarist.
I made no such effort last time.
That said, I feel this diary flies in the face of the Daily Kos mission as set forth in FAQ.
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
This seems to me to be a blog for people who wish to improve America through participation, not abandon America through defeatism. And it must be nice to have that kind of money to throw around. If I did, I would probably donate to food banks and programs like the health fair in Wise, VA, and to progressive candidates of my choice.
Under no circumstances would I "take my ball and go home."
I AM home.
From the current thread:
Quite pathetic that this diary would make the rec (1+ / 0-)
list.
I thought DailyKos was about making life better for Americans in America not about how best to run away from America with your tails between your legs because an election or two didn't go your way.

What you just said makes me sick. (4+ / 0-)
I feel like I stepped on a dog turd just reading it. You don't even seem to recognize that you play a role in how this country fares, it's just something other people do or don't do to make you comfortable. And then when the rest of us fail to meet your standards, you make hysterical, insulting declarations like...
Everything this country stood for has been destroyed, and it is going to get worse.
This is your idea of reality, Nostradamus? You're a helpless peasant in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and the rest of us are just self-deluding fools merely pretending to make a difference when in fact we're all doomed, DOOMED! We should just shut down Daily Kos right now, because there's no point! Thank you for bringing us this message, O Horseman of The Apocalypse.
Without your inspirational words, I might have thought us intelligent people capable of influencing our environment, but apparently we're just foolish peons who should set out in a flotilla of life rafts in hopes of reaching the shores of France or Canada. After all, we have nothing to lose, we're "slaves" - so quick, run for it before the dogs catch you!

Not being particularly fond of the user to whom this comment was in reply to made me like it just a wee bit better, I should confess.
And, finally, from a front pager:
Culture is NOT meaningless. (3+ / 0-)
I've traveled pretty extensively too. You're right, people are mostly the same all over. But there are differences and many of those differences are good things worth preserving, and worth coming home to.
As for me, I love Europe. But I couldn't just up and move there. Why? Because there are very few black people of Caribbean ancestry from Brooklyn there. For that cultural experience, one has to be in the Caribbean parts of Brooklyn, which, to me, is just simply home.
So, I'll just have to tough it out and do what I can to make home as best it can be.

These are statements with which I find that I agree.
Proceeding therefrom, I offer my opinion that, while some may find it a valuable resource, and that the research that went into it is obviously painstaking, and the effort is commendable, there may well be a place for such a diary.
Unfortunately, for reasons that I've outlined above, I feel that Daily Kos isn't it.
Thank you for reading.
