Goooooooood afternoon/evening, Gulf Watchers!!! Wilkommen, bienvenue, welcome to the Friday Block Party! If you haven’t joined us before, double welcome. We are a community who came together as we watched the disaster unfold in the Gulf of Mexico. We sometimes relieved the stress of our 24/7 vigil by sharing the music of the Gulf Coast, and a compilation of our favorites can be found here. We continue to monitor ongoing related events, but on Friday nights, we par-TAY...sing, dance, eat, drink and chat back and forth to share our stories, worries and joys. Don’t be shy...jump on in, because tonight we are going to do some traveling. Oh, the places we'll go!
This is a pot luck, so put your contributions anywhere there's an empty spot. If you could make the food and drink fit our travel theme today, that would be great.
PLEASE POST LINKS ONLY--NO VIDEOS OR PHOTOS. Links are kinder to those with low bandwidth. If you don't know how to create links, holler and somebody will help.
Let’s start our Journey with a shot of high octane, cuz we were Born to Run.
Going by car would be okay, but Take It Easy, don’t let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy. If there are lots of us, it might be better if we were Leaving on a Jet Plane. I'll bet Paul Pena could get us tickets on a Jet Airliner.
There are trains. We could take the Chatanooga Choo Choo, or ride to the End of the Line. (Nice tribute to Roy Orbison there).
Someplace in America? From the Kentucky coalmines to the California sun, there are many options. To mention only a few:
Kansas City
Memphis
West Virginia via Country Roads
San Francisco. We'll stay at the Hotel California. Warner Chappell has disabled the audio on most of the Youtube Eagle versions, but they haven't twigged to this one yet, which seems to have been posted by a Hungarian fan. You tell me your "weird hotel" stories and I'll tell you mine.
Personally, I’d like to be more of a Wanderer. I'd like to go back to Mexico or Italia. Italy is the only place I have ever gotten literal ants in my pants. Or was that Zurich? Must have been Zurich because I remember everything was so ineffably civilized and tidy and there I was ducking into doorways to claw at my nether parts.
There are so many places I haven't seen. Sheesh, I've never even been to The White Cliffs of Dover or Penny Lane. Here, have some bangers and mash, with spotted dick for dessert.
Africa!!!
Greece. Ah, the food...spanakopita, moussaka, tzatziki, kolokythakia.
How about a Sea Cruise to Melanesia? Fun to see the comments in Pidgin. Can you speak it? You can? You tumas, you numbawan!
A few might prefer a truly remote place Where the Streets Have No Name.
If Earth is too tame for yuz, then Fly Me to the Moon but if we’re venturing into outer space, we’ll want to stay in touch with Ground Control.
There is such a thing as too much travel. We might start to feel like a Rolling Stone, like we're Running on Empty. Until then, let's see more of this glorious planet and the rest of the galaxy. Share your memories and music, or tell us about any travel books, documentaries or movies you’d recommend. I have become an armchair adventurer myself, but that's okay. My closest family is where I am, so I always have my Rocky Mountain High. If I do decide to take off, I'll Take You with Me Everywhere I Go.
Happy Trails!
