Inspired by the President's new OFA video about his tax cut "compromise" to OFA members and the OFA request for comments, I prepared and sent a response which, concurrent with my current need for a public rant, I decided to share with the community. You'll find it over the hump.
Dear Mr. President,
I just watched your OFA video regarding the tax "compromise" you reached with Republicans and with all respect, the compromise does not reflect the change you said you were bringing to Washington and it is not change I or any American should believe in. Rather, it is simply more of the same old BS we always get from Republicans packaged in neat little bows eagerly provided by weak-kneed, bi-partisan Democrats.
As a supporter of you and a lifelong Democrat, I am disgusted by your betrayal of not just a campaign promise but a cherished idea of every Democrat, fair taxation. Tax cuts for millionaires AND a cut in estate taxes!
Sir, the Republicans were not "forced" to do anything. They gave up nothing.
Republicans got what they wanted and more. They got tax cuts for the rich who do not need them and will not use them to help the economy. They got cuts in the estate tax that will further concentrate wealth at the top and do nothing to create jobs for Americans.
Sir, you say you are ready to fight. I don't believe you.
My life experiences teach me there are no serious conflicts that are engaged and resolved without any injuries. And, if you think I am a sanctimonious or purist Democrat because I think this conflict should have been engaged, then you sir are a pollyanish wimp.
In every real fight that is not artificially contained (i.e., sporting events), there is always some collateral damage. And, the claim that you did what you did to avoid harm to some people only establishes that you either do not know anything about real conflict or are incapable of such action because you cannot stomach it.
Your proposal, your capitulation, to politicians who would hold desperate Americans hostage so they can get unnecessary and immoral tax cuts for the rich, is not the right thing for America. I hope with all my heart there enough people in Congress with real spine to kill it.
Sincerely,
dicta
